The jewel radius should be 2/5 to 3 times the pivot radius. In general, the greater the ratio between jewel and pivot, the greater the sensitivity and pivot roll The contact area of the pivot should be highly polished and a finish of 2 to 3 micro-inch on the pivot radius is recommended.
CONE SHAPED JEWEL
In the bearing a steel shaft is turning ended with a radius smaller than the radius of the bearing cone apex. It is used in measuring instruments with a deflecting pointer (e. g. Voltmeter, ammeter).

CUP SHAPED JEWEL
Between the two bearings the instrument axis is freely - turning. It is ended with a radius (steel ball) smaller than the radius of the spherical recess. It absorbs especially axial pressures. It is used as a footstep bearing of the electricity meters of all kinds.

VEE SHAPED JEWEL
Vee Jewels are well suited to sensitive instruments where the moving element is light. They offer minimum friction when used with conical, small radiused pivots and permit slight lateral movement. The jewel radius should be 3 times larger than the pivot radius for low friction torque, sensitivity, and resistance to deformation. The contact area of the pivot should be highly polished and a micro-inch finish of 2 or better on the pivot radius is recommended.

JEWEL ASSEMBLIES
Set in Brass, Vee Jewel Assemblies are screw mounted. Spring loaded assemblies are recommended in an environment of shock and vibration. The Beryllium Copper spring acts as a shock absorber and permits the jewel and pivot to move without breaking and then return to its normal position. Non-spring loaded screw mounted assemblies are typically used in a more stable environment. Pivot not included.
